Our Spring Break 2001: Turkey (mostly Cappadocia)

Arlee has wanted to go to Cappadocia ever since a park ranger at Mesa Verde told her "if you like it here, you've gotta go to this place in Turkey..."

As far as just a plain enjoyable time in a neat place, Patrick rates this "the best vacation since our honeymoon in Hawaii."

We rented a car; the freedom and relaxed pace made for a great week.
Istanbul was great for history and architecture. It was good to see a place both of us had taught about (Constantinople). Wow!

We were lured into a carpet shop -- the prices were crazy (the proprietor didn't seem to understand we lived in the Middle East), but we did get to take a nice picture of a weaver.

Jesse is as big a fan of carpet shopping as mom and dad. He also liked the weather being cold enough to give him a chance to wear his wool hat.

The famous blue mosque. We took a break to draw and color pictures of it.

I've seen this picture in so many art and history textbooks...a famous mosaic from the Hagia Sophia. It was moving to be in the building.

This is the Blue Mosque seen from the Haga Sophia. Pretty artsy shot. You can decide if there is deep meaning.
