Music and Drama at Dhahran Academy High School

The Visual and Performing Arts programs allow students to explore individual interests, develop skills and talents, and express themselves in a wide variety of ways.
Visual Arts, Music, and Drama, in classes as well as co-curricular activities, play a vital role in the life of the school. Art and photography exhibitions, theatre productions, and music concerts take place throughout the year.
The visual and performing arts courses, along with their related activities, serve to strengthen aesthetic appreciation, and to help our students become lifelong discerning patrons of and participants in the arts. Students must complete a minimum of 1 credit to meet graduation requirements."

Choir:

Choir is a PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLE class for students in grades 9-12.

Members will work on individual vocal techniques: music reading, accurate pitch, vowel quality, breath support and control, diction--how to SING WELL as individuals.

And, the group will work together on choral ensemble skills: INTONATION (PITCH), BALANCE, BLEND (VOWEL UNIFORMITY), AND PRECISION (DICTION AND RHYTHMIC ACCURACY).

Choir will perform music in genres ranging from Renaissance madrigals to rock musicals, with an emphasis on the immediate practical application of skills.

While prior musical training is an asset, none is required -- all that is necessary is a desire to learn to sing!

This group will perform regularly throughout the school year.

Prerequisite: Interview with instructor.

Credit: 10 (Course may be repeated for credit: up to 40)

Emphasis is on immediate practical application of skills. The group will serve as a talent pool: the most advanced students will also perform as a small Wind Ensemble; other small ensembles may perform according to student interest and ability.

These groups will perform publicly for three major concerts as well as other events throughout the school year.

Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor(s).

Beginning Guitar:

Playing the guitar is a lifelong music skill which many students find very rewarding. This class assumes that the student is a complete beginner on guitar, with no previous music instruction. The ability to read music or play another instrument will be an asset--but is not necessary for success in the course. The class will take a balanced approach with a goal of positioning each student for continued
self-directed individual study in his/her areas of interest.

Credit: 5 (This course may not be repeated for credit).

Special requirement: student must supply his/her own ACOUSTIC guitar.

Drama One:

This is an entry-level drama course for students with little or no acting experience. Basic drama topics (structure and varieties of drama, improvisation, pantomime, use of voice and diction, acting techniques and practical aspects of production) are covered through a hands-on approach.

Students are strongly encouraged to audition for extra-curricular drama productions.

Drama Two (Advanced Drama):

This course is for students who have completed Drama One, or who have considerable outside drama experience. Emphasis is on building and refining theatre skills, and upon the immediate practical application of skills.

Students should be eager to audition for extra-curricular drama productions.

Credit: 5 (This course may be repeated for credit).
